Sarah' Top 5

Sarah’s Top 5

Hey y’all! I’m Sarah, and this is my top 5 from SUPA Writing 105! This top 5 consists of 5 very important units to me that I learned in this class, and how they will help me in the future. First I would just like to thank this course, my peers taking this class with me and my teacher, you guys made it such a fun and comfortable year even in the middle of a pandemic. This for sure will be a class I will never forget, for various reasons.

Looking back at my notebook full of notes from this class, I feel my first topic should be me talking about free writes. Free writes were a new thing to me when I started this class,  and at first I was confused by them. Then I started to do them more, and grew more comfortable with them. The idea of free writing always seemed weird to me, this idea of just writing things down, not looking back to fix it or anything, just to keep writing. And if we are going to be honest, that's how I write my longer papers. I just write and see where it takes me, then I would go back and fix what I needed too. But the idea of me just writing something shorter and not being able to fix it, it was hard for me to grasp. But once I had it, I knew what I was doing and this topic/idea and I know for a fact that it has helped me a bunch this year. Free writing will definitely be something that I take with me to college and even further into my future.

My next topic was the New York Times Op Docs. I absolutely loved this topic, everyone's ideas for this concept were so different and we had so much freedom to choose and discuss what we wanted. I loved these Op Docs because not only was it a short video that told a story, but it also gave me research and things to look at with a different perspective. This topic also showed me the difference between skinny questions and fat questions. The concept of fat vs. skinny questions is definitely something that I will be using in the future, especially seeing that I am going to college to be a teacher. I can use the idea of fat and skinny questions for my students so they can understand things a little better and have more experience with these types of questions.

My third favorite topic in this class was analysis. At first, I struggled with analysis and was confused with all of it, because there were so many steps to it and so many concepts to grasp and understand about all of the different analyses. But once you get the hang of analysis, it feels like nothing anymore and you can look at something and ask so many questions about whatever it is that you’re looking at. And the fun part about analysis is that you get to question everything. My teacher told me that for analysis, you could never ask too many questions. And I love looking things up and reading what others are thinking and saying about these things. And the thing that I probably loved the most about analysis is that you can take it, and run with it. And the more you do research the more things you find and the more questions you can ask and augh. I loved analysis and at first I thought that I was going to hate it. But nope.

Fourth, was the argumentative topic. Ever since argumentative essays and papers have become a topic in English classes, I have always loved writing them. For this class I didn’t know what topic to choose, but when I found one that I loved I was able to write so freely. Plus with this argumentative topic, my teacher taught us that arguments weren’t made for one party to be right and the other wrong. But instead arguments were made to be used as discussion and to show different sides of the same concept.

Lastly, I loved all of the blogs. I love writing on my blog because it is a place where I can use MY actual voice and express how I felt in the moment of whatever it was that I was doing. I was able to personalize my blog compared to having a normal and basic blog like everyone else. I was able to use my brother as an example, put in my own two senses and not have points be taken away from me. Yes at times the blog felt like a burden with always trying to have it updated, but other times the blog felt like a safe place for me just to write and put my words out in this world.

Overall, I loved this class and loved everything that I learned from SUPA Writing 105. This is a class that I will always remember and a class that I will use as a base for my writing. Because this class has given me so many foundation prompts for me to just grow on. So thank you for that. Growing up through school I always thought that I was too stupid to take the honors/AP/SUPA courses, yet here I am. Growing and becoming a stronger writer, with One SUPA course in my belt before going off to college. I am proud with how far I have come this year, and I would like to thank yall for coming on this journey with me.

Until next time

~Sarah:)
